WBB | 23-24 Season Recap
The SAIT Trojans women's basketball team finished seventh in the southern division of the ACAC this season, ending the year with a 9-12 record.
The story of their season, though, was their resilience.
The Trojans started 0-5. This could’ve been a death sentence for the team, but with playoffs still in their sights, they knew they’d have to go on a run to give themselves a shot. A lot of teams would’ve crumbled after such a tough start, but SAIT bounced back.
They won four of their next five games, putting themselves right back in the hunt with a 4-6 record heading into the winter break.
The break came at a tough time, as it would’ve been nice to have non-stop momentum after such a good stretch of games. The Trojans won their first game back, but went 4-6 the rest of the way, missing the playoffs by three games.
Star point guard Brook Baker was awarded ACAC all-conference first-team honours after her spectacular season. She led the entire conference in minutes, minutes per game, total field goals, defensive rebounds, points and points per game. Needless to say, it was a monster season for Baker.
She averaged 21.5 points per game, 9.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists. She also finished third in the conference in steals, second in free throws made, and fourth in threes made.
Another star, forward Anegor Wol, impressed all year. In her fourth year with the Trojans, Wol started all 21 games and averaged 15 points per game, good for eighth in the conference. She led the starters in field goal percentage and finished top 10 in the conference in total field goals and free throws made.
Meghan Stagoll joined the team for the final 11 contests and played more than anyone. Not a scorer, Stagoll led the team in assists per game with 4.2 to go along with over five boards. She also led the team in blocks per game during the second half of the year.
While the team just missed the playoffs, the heart to compete all the way to the end after such a tough start to the year is admirable. The girls should be proud of the fight they showed all season.
