SAIT falls to 0-2 at Nationals
LANGLEY, BC, (March 15, 2019) - SAIT Trojans head coach Marty Birky took the blame Friday afternoon.
He didn't have much else to say following his team's 90-82 loss to the Humber College Hawks in their bronze medal quarter-final matchup at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championship - hosted by Langara College in Langley, BC.
"This loss is on me," he said. "We focused so much on our offence that our defence really let us down, so I'm going to take this one."
SAIT falls to 0-2 at the national tournament, which started with a 102-84 loss to Vancouver Island University on Thursday afternoon.
The lone bright spot Friday afternoon for SAIT was Charlie Conner. After being held scoreless on Thursday, Conner went off for a 24 points to go along with nine rebounds and five assists.
Teammate Ian Tevis finished with 18 points.
In the game itself, SAIT found themselves down 19-13 after the first quarter.
The Trojans turned things around in the second quarter, and even led by as much as seven at one point, before giving back the lead for good before the half.
SAIT will finish their weekend tomorrow afternoon at 3pm (MST) when they take on the host Falcons in the placement match. Going 1-2 at the tournament would be considerably better than going 0-3.
"We have very prideful guys, so if we can't get up to finish this off with a win, I'll go to our bench," Birky said. "But, I'm confident that we will be ready to go."
Jaylan Morgan led the Hawks with 20 points.
